Frequently Asked Questions

For prospective and current students

What types of lesson do you offer?
Depending on your office location, we offer instruction in voice, piano, guitar (electric or acoustic), bass guitar, ukulele, saxophone, drums, and music production for students beginner through advanced.
What do I need to have to take lessons? Do you provide instruments?
We do not provide instruments for your individual practice, but the music room at your office have musical instruments that you can use during your lesson. For students who do not have a guitar or a piano, we encourage you to support local businesses, and can recommend several locations where they may be purchased or rented. Your teacher will recommend study materials for you to obtain.
How long are lessons? When do they occur?
Individual lessons are 30 minutes long, and will occur weekly, on the day that instrument’s instructor is at your workplace.
How can I be sure that the lessons will be right for me?
Before you commit to starting lessons, you can schedule a free 15-minute interview with your potential teacher to discuss your background, interests, goals and expectations.
Do I have to pay for lessons?
Yes. As a vendor that operates at Seattle area workplaces, Play at Work does not receive any subsidy from the employers it serves; its instructors are paid solely through the monthly lesson fees collected from students. To attract and retain highly qualified instructors, Play at Work has enacted policies intended to maintain a consistent student volume from week to week. Thus, we do not charge for lessons, we charge for reserved time slots. This policy allows our unique business to deliver musical instruction with highly qualified instructors at competitive rates without charging a premium for the convenience of workplace lessons. We do not offer refunds for lessons missed.
What is the cost of individual lessons?
For business year 2023-2024, the monthly cost for four 30-minute individual lessons is $216. Most of our clients are scheduled for ongoing weekly lessons so tuition costs vary from month to month. Depending on instructors’ availability, students may also request longer lessons.
How do I pay for my lessons?
Play at Work will send you a registration link for your first lesson, which will prompt you to submit payment for the first lesson. When we receive your registration with your preferred debit or credit card, we will set you up for automatic monthly payment. Your card will be charged in the beginning of each month for all upcoming lessons in the giving month.
What if I have vacation (or other absence) planned?
If the student plans to miss one lesson, they will notify their instructor and a make-up lesson will be scheduled. All makeup lessons will be offered on-line. However, if the student plans to miss multiple lessons in a given month, they must notify us via email (info@playatworknow.com) before the first of the month (start of billing cycle). They will either pay a $20/lesson hold fee to keep their scheduled spot, or pause their account and pay a $25 reactivation fee, with no guarantee of keeping the scheduled spot.
What if I must miss a lesson due to unexpected circumstances?
Because our instructors will be at your workplace to teach all their students on a given day, you are charged for your time slot even if you are unable to attend; no refunds will be given. However, students are permitted one makeup lesson per quarter, to be arranged with the instructor. As a common courtesy, please notify your instructor as soon as you know that you need to cancel.
What if the instructor cancels a lesson?
If an instructor misses a lesson, you may either receive a credit towards the next month or a refund.
What if I decide to discontinue lessons?
We require two weeks’ notice via email to playatworknow@gmail.com or info@playatworknow.com before the next month’s billing cycle begins. Play at Work will then cancel your automatic payment subscription.
